The Pufbulo is a closed species that lives on Prova. They are often kept as livestock.

Description

Pufbulo are quadrupedal hooven mammals covered in fur, with bushy tails and huge squishy noses. They have bright, colorful coats, often with spots. Their eyes are proportionally large, with square pupils.

Adults can grow to be 18 inches tall on average. The species gives live birth, usually to twins.

Breeds

The Center Pufbulo living in the Center of Prova are considered to be the "default", in all attributes. They have short legs, disproportionately huge tails, and fatty necks that meld into their body. They are remarkably intelligent compared to other breeds, forming little "societies" within the herds.

The Southwest Pufbulo is a breed that lives on Southwest Prova. They are known for having unusually long necks and legs in comparison, much shorter tails, and occasionally fluffy manes.

North Pufbulo, which reside on North Prova, are incredibly fluffy with massive curly horns. In the summer months, they resemble the Pufbulo of the center, but when winter comes they become so encompassed by white fur they resmble little more than massive shuffling snowballs. North Pufbulo survive by grazing on fast-growing mosses in the winter and wild grass in the summer.

Traits

Pufbulo morphs are understood to have varying degrees of rarity, many of them dependent on the environment they grew up in. Here are the ones currently known.

Behavior

Pufbulo are flock animals with a strong dominance hierarchy. Every herd of Pufbulo has a designated leader who guides them to new pastures. This leader is typically the largest of the flock, with the largest horns as well. Unfortunately, the herd does not measure the leader's size by weight or muscle mass alone, but also the size of the Pufbulo's fluff. A sudden rainstorm, or a Kagzar shearing, can throw a herd into anarchy until a new largest Pufbulo is determined.

Herds of the species can still be found in the wild, but they thrive within Kagzar captivity. Wild Pufbulo maintain their horns, but domesticated ones have their horns clipped off at birth by their shepherds to prevent injury to each other. A wild Pufbulo's horns are a source of extreme pride, despite being a pair of blunt nubs that aren't very useful in any context.

Culture

Being prey animals, Pufbulo have a strong belief in the afterlife that maintains their social sanity. By being a member of a flock, obeying the flock leader, and dying in a way that is considered "acceptable" like being eaten instead of falling off a cliff, Pufbulo are allowed into a beautiful life after death. The Pufbulo believe that the sky is the underside of another world, and the terrain they live on is in turn the sky of another. If a Pufbulo lives and dies acceptably, they move upwards a world to a life that is generally more pleasant. If not, they are sent downward where life is even worse.

The herds of Pufbulo are ruled in totality by the largest Pufbulo, who makes all decisions towards the life of the group. It is up to them to direct the herd to the greenest pastures, protect the herd from predators, and ensure the herd's continued existence. Any Pufbulo who refuses to follow this rule is exiled - a fate that means certain death.

Combat

Pufbulo have little ability to defend themselves. They rely on numbers and the ability to run, and in the absence of both, they are easily preyed upon. A truly desperate wild Pufbulo may attempt to headbutt an aggressor, but unless it is a long-horned Northern variety, this rarely works.

Despite their individual weakness, a full herd of Pufbulo is very capable of defending itself. Under the guidance of an unusually wise leader, they can be directed to group-ram the enemy into submission where it is then stomped to death under dozens of hooves.

Diet

Pufbulo are exclusively herbivorous grazing animals. They have a four-chambered digestive system to break down plant matter.
